Poland is chasing the United States in terms of the number of obese children. According to WHO statistics, the number of children with weight problems has tripled in the last 20 years. Today, up to 16% of children weigh too much. 10-12 year olds were examined and dramatic results were obtained. Polish children are fatter than children in other European countries. The percentage of obese 11-year-olds in Poland is the largest in the world. Scientists say the problem is getting worse and everything seems to indicate that it will grow. A real plague of obesity awaits us, and with it a lot of health problems.

How does it happend? What has changed over the years that our children are getting fat?

Negative habits at home

Children get fat because from the very beginning they are brought up in homes with incorrect eating habits. In this way they become more like their parents (or grandparents!). However, this is not discussed because it is a taboo subject.

Mum or dad having a weight problem will most likely raise a child who will also be "too round". When we add to this that fat cells form in the largest number up to the age of 7, the problem of incorrect eating habits in childhood becomes very serious. Overweight among the youngest children often turns into problems in adulthood.

This does not mean, of course, that fat cells do not form in adulthood, because the latest research results prove that this is happening. It is true, however, that a certain tendency of the organism started in childhood affects our whole future.

Every second adult in Poland complains about excessive kilos. Are these real problems? Or perhaps imaginary, promoted by the media, in which anorectic models reign?

It turns out that the answer is not optimistic. A survey of the state of health of Poles aged 20 to 74 conducted in 16 voivodships confirmed that as much as 60% of men and 50% of women are overweight or obese. Conclusions from other studies have confirmed that high BMI of parents usually results in high BMI in children. In other words - obese parents usually raise obese children.

And it is worth adding right away that obesity is not an aesthetic problem, but above all a health problem, especially in the context of our children's developing organisms. Excessive weight has an effect on virtually every system and organ!

Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is the best decision we can make for a child. Unfortunately, for various reasons, we don't always feed naturally.

However, it is worth knowing that mother's milk has a beneficial effect on children's later eating habits. According to scientists, breastfeeding protects against obesity for a variety of reasons, firstly it allows to develop appetite control due to on-demand feeding, secondly breastfed babies get less protein than those fed with bottle, which affects their weight in the future, thirdly breastfeeding In our research, we have had a tendency to lead a healthier lifestyle, including avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol.

Food to take your hands

Where does the problem of overweight in children come from?

There are plenty of reasons. One of them is to calm children by giving them food. From an early age. The reaction is simple - cry, well a bottle, sometimes a breast. And although theoretically a child who is not hungry will not eat, then a certain negative pattern of behavior persists. Over time, the toddler begins to confuse hunger and irritation. Then it's not better. Is the child supposed to sit in a pram? Well, booty, crisps, sticks, biscuits. It's nothing, it's just a small cookie. For sure?

Studies conducted on obese people showed that most of them lived in the belief that they did not eat much. Only a conscientious recording of what she ate every day allowed a real look at the situation and the huge amounts of food absorbed. Often the same mechanism is activated when we look at the amounts eaten by our children. We see small portions, forgetting about snacks and the fact that the child does not need too much food.

Well, a little bit

It is amazing that next to the massive scale obesity there is a second problem with so-called in-eaters. Unfortunately, with age, children who eat little often change into those they eat stress, eat when they are tired or tired, people unable to recognize when they are really hungry.

Forcing to eat in childhood, using different tactics to let your toddler eat something, rewarding food unfortunately can have disastrous effects. Although in many cases it can help to achieve the desired goal and nothing more, there is no shortage of stories of obese people who, in their childhood, according to their parents, ate too little.

Providing baby products

Where does obesity come from? Often from giving children products created for children.

You say absurd What should I serve if he wants to feed a child? It is products created for children that are suitable for my daughter or son!

However, it turns out that products dedicated to the youngest are far from healthy. Let's take an example - popular cheese for children, which contains 2-3 teaspoons of sugar, Flavored milk for children contains as much as 42 grams of sugar (i.e. twice as much as the daily norm).

The situation is even worse when we look at baby products.

Nestle banana flavored rice porridge has sugar in second place (there is more of it than the banana, which is in the name, so it would be better to call rice porridge with sugar instead of banana). The manufacturer who offers this porridge for parents of young children at the same time on his website recommends to use a healthy diet for the youngest. No comment.

In order not to be accused of attacking one producer, it should be added that the situation is similar with products of other brands, for example Bobovita porridge, in which sugar is also listed in second place. The content looks similar yogurt for children. These have up to 4 sugar cubes (in a small box).

They don't look good either ready-made teas for babies. They are also better to avoid. The composition of BoboVita tea with peach flavor is below. The product is recommended for children over 6 months. It will not be an exaggeration if I write that it is only sugar. In 100 grams of the product as much as 97.7 is just sugar! Dextrose comes first - plain sugar, followed by refined sugar, followed by maltodextrin - sugar. And with beautiful campaigns promoting healthy eating!

By current standards a child should not consume more than 20 grams of sucrose per day (equivalent to two heaped teaspoons of sugar). This figure applies not only to direct sugar consumption, but also to hidden sugar sources (e.g. in bread, sausages, snacks).

If so many baby products contain such huge amounts of sugar, and at the same time the producers who create these products create campaigns to promote healthy eating, what can you call it? Split Your Self?

Finally, it should be added that for the current plague of obesity, according to scientists, not excess fat corresponds, but just excess sugar in the diet. According to specialists, it is widespread in society sugar addiction. Trying to put off the white powder ends with exasperation and a strong need to reach for something sweet. And from an early age.

No time

The high pace of life is not conducive to healthy eating. Just like the changed family model and the huge availability of highly processed products, which according to numerous scientific papers are the cause of weight gain.

Now it is not easy to buy good quality food. Although there is a lot of goods in supermarkets, the presence of shelves with so-called healthy food tells a lot about our time. What kind of food can you find in other parts of the store, if healthy fits on one shelf?

The problem is also crazy pace of life, work of both parents, terrible fatigue. It is not surprising that when mom has a choice whether to spend half an hour with children after work at play or cook a healthy soup - she chooses the first. As a consequence of the shortage of time we choose a diet that allows us to prepare quick meals, not necessarily healthy.

We also eat fast food. No one today is surprised by the view of a three-year-old eating a fries with his parents in a shopping mall or a twelve-year-old eating chips after school. Many children do not eat lunch at school, because they think they are not good, then they eat buns or crisps to wait somehow the evening when the parent gives a warm dinner, often heated in the microwave.

The problem is also bad example from peers. When most children bring chips and sticks to school, many children carrying an apple and wholemeal bread sandwich begin to feel "different". He often protests, wants to be like "everyone".

Because you will sweat

According to nutritionists our diet affects 80% of our weight. It depends on the content of the plates how we look and what our children look like. However, it is also important movement, systematic physical exertion, although in many homes its meaning is exalted, by reasoning in this way - a child can eat anything, because he will burn excessive calories anyway. Unfortunately, this is a very risky theory.

The example goes from above. And we as parents also have a problem to find time for physical activity. We usually lead a sedentary lifestyle. Our children take over a similar lifestyle. Instead of running around the yard, they often choose a tablet, mobile phone or online game.

However, the problem starts much earlier ...

In the first years of life, we puff and blow on children who cannot get dirty, because we want them to look nice, cannot sweat, because we are afraid of infection. Not surprisingly, children whose daily menu is mainly sugar have poor immunity and no dietary supplement or magic syrup will help.

What am I supposed to eat? You're exaggerating, that's all

The problem with childhood obesity is a problem arising from underestimating the threat and making fun of healthy lifestyle principles. We say that the child will grow up, that there is nothing to overdo. We like chubby babies, we are happy when the daughter or son has a big appetite. In the forums we are thundering that we will not hurt our child by depriving him of the joy of eating, that we bring up normally, we are not ecoterrorists, that nobody died of chocolate cream or lollipop, that everything is for people.

Then, also on the internet, we ask for a prescription for the child's immunity, we are looking for better toothpastes to stop the caries, we are asking for advice on how to control a child who is hyperactive. And we absolutely don't know why this is happening ... because everything is for people. As a child, we ate bread and sugar, why can't my child eat it? The problem is that times have changed. And the diet of Poles today does not look like 30 years ago. Today's threats did not exist once ...

P.S. According to specialists, over 80% of cases of overweight and obesity are the result of poor eating habits and lack of exercise. The above article does not discuss the situation when the child is obese due to illness.
